OUR Community

Find out why SMU students are some of the warmest and friendliest people you'll ever meet!

“My #WhySMU would be because of the unique culture that SMU has – a forward looking school that values education upon the elements of creativity, enthusiasm, exciting yet professional. Because of its central location, it has a great network and the city landscape really gives SMU the energy that is rarely found in other schools. Moreover, its unique pedagogy and seminar-based lectures really put students at the heart of their own learning – and this special feeling one gets of being in control of your future was a key factor in my decision.”

How has your SMU scholarship benefitted you so far?

The Global Impact Scholarship (GIS) has given me many benefits I am incredibly thankful for. First and foremost, it has given me the opportunity to participate in an overseas community involvement programme (OCSP) to Jaipur, India where I got to teach the women financial literacy, improved their current Inventory and organizational structure, as well as to establish a new business model for them by linking the center with corporate firms in Singapore through which they can sell their handicrafts as corporate gifts. We hope to enable and empower them.

Apart from the trip, we also got to have the SMU-X course for our Leadership and Teambuilding module. The course is special for it gave us the opportunity to interact and work with CEOs of major companies or organizations in Singapore. Personally, I worked with the National Council of Social Service and we managed to build a budget toolkit for them. Being able to help major organizations solve an ongoing problem, not only does it feel surreal, the satisfaction derived from doing so is also incredible.

A highlight of my SMU experience so far would be:

As I am part of Cognitare, the business case club in SMU, I had the opportunity of travelling overseas, specifically to Maastricht, Netherlands to represent the university in an international Case Competition. Although we did not win, it was incredible for a freshman to have been given this opportunity. I have made many new friends and pushed my knowledge boundaries beyond what I expected. Also, closer to home are the friendships that I have forged in SMU. From my various experiences of OCSP, attending camps as a freshman or as a facilitator to my CCAs, I have made fond memories and crafted keen friendships that I believe will last for a very, very long time.

Any words of advice to students who are choosing a university?

Follow your heart and choose a place where you can envision yourself growing, learning and having fun in the next few years to come. There will never be the perfect university, but you can pick the one which you will not regret.
