Innovative Curriculum

The SMU broad-based and rigorous curriculum is reviewed constantly to stay relevant. It delivers both depth and breadth of knowledge, and equips students with a total skill-set, consisting of hard knowledge skills, soft people skills (analytical thinking, problem solving, communication, presentation, leadership and team-building) and the 'heart' skills (ethical and social responsibility). This way, students get every opportunity to be transformed into well-rounded leaders and making a difference when they graduate.

Our exciting and flexible curriculum allows students to tailor their course structures according to their strengths and interests.  All students take courses in the University Core, considered the heart of the undergraduate programmes. Students also deepen their knowledge base by taking courses in their chosen specialisations, and broaden their perspectives through courses in arts and the sciences, global studies, technology, entrepreneurship and career skills. They also gain real life perspectives by undertaking internships, and building a balanced character by participating in community service projects.

The duration of our programmes is 4 years. Non-Law single degree students may be able to complete the programme in 3 years or 3.5 years. Most SMU students see the value of spending 4 years at SMU to broaden their knowledge base and real-life skills through internships and global exposure programmes.

Revamped Curriculum, SMU LifeLessons, SMU-X
A revamp of the SMU common curriculum for all freshmen was undertaken in 2014. Fully implemented in 2015, students can look forward to a refreshed curriculum that offers more breadth and variety so as to prepare them to be market-ready. Under this new curriculum, we have grouped our modules into 8 clusters, which represent the broad bodies of knowledge we want our students to have. The breadth of knowledge and skills that you gain from these courses will prepare you well as you go deeper into your course specialisations.

Complementing the SMU academic programme is the SMU LifeLessons. A first in Singapore's tertiary sector, the SMU LifeLessons is a structured programme that looks at values-based education through multiple platforms. It aims to maximise students' out-of-classroom learning experiences through their participation in community service, internships, student exchange programmes, sports clubs, arts groups, special interest groups and other student-related events and activities.

SMU-X is the university's latest learning experiment in which lessons will be centred on solving real-world problems through projects.

A public policy management course, for instance, may be taught by getting students to work with a social welfare agency to draw up programmes for disadvantaged families. Professors and corporate partners will guide and mentor students through their projects. The courses will be open to all students. Each will offer around 50 places. Students will earn credits from the semester-long courses and they will be graded on their participation and the final outcome of the project.

To support this new initiative, several facilities have been put in place - SMU Labs and the newly renovated Li Ka Shing Library which boasts several active learning classrooms with flexible furniture, a multi-screen environment, 24/7 Learning Commons, the White Room for brainstorming, the Huddle Room, discussion booths, the One Button Studio for presentations and co-working spaces, amongst others.
