About the Financial Award

Established in 2015, the objective of the Worldwide Hotels-Choo Chong Ngen Bursary (formerly known as Hotel 81-Choo Chong Ngen Bursary) is to benefit financially needy Singaporean undergraduates enrolled in any full-time degree programme at SMU – so as to ensure that deserving students can achieve academic excellence and complete their university education, regardless of their ethnicity and means and without financial obstacles.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time undergraduates enrolled in any degree programme
  • Singapore Citizens
  • Good CCA and/or community service involvement
  • With demonstrated financial needs (gross monthly household per capita income not exceeding $950)

Tenure and Benefits

  • $8,000 (towards subsidised tuition fee)
  • Tenable for one year of study
  • May be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.

Application

Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor

Mr Choo Chong Ngen, is the Founder and Group Chairman of Worldwide Hotels, for the following homegrown brands – V Hotel, Hotel Boss, Hotel Mi, Value Hotel, Venue Hotel and Hotel 81. He spear-headed the growth to its current size consisting of 43 hotels with over 8,000 rooms across Asia Pacific within 25 years. Mr Choo was awarded the prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year (Singapore) by Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards (APEA) in 2013.

Mr Choo endowed a generous gift of $2 million to establish the Worldwide Hotels-Choo Chong Ngen Bursary in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of the Singapore Management University.  With the matching by the Singapore Government, the proceeds will fund 15 bursaries annually to benefit financially needy Singaporean undergraduate students.
