General Requirements
Acceptable Diploma | A good NUS High School diploma. |
Interview | Shortlisted applicants for courses other than Law will be interviewed. Shortlisted applicants for Law must take a writing test (to be held in person at SMU). After the test, only applicants who have been further shortlisted will be invited to an interview. Only shortlisted applicants who attend both the writing test and the interview will be further considered for admission. Click here for more information on this. |
Other Requirements
- English Language Subject CAP of B+ or better or
- B+ or better in EL5102 English for Academic Purposes or EL5101 Language in Society II or EL6103 Language in Society III (old curriculum) or
- B+ or better in EL5131 Critical Reading and Writing II or EL6131 Critical Reading and Writing III (new curriculum)
Applicants who fall short of the above requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Unless exempted from Mother Tongue Language (MTL) requirement, Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents must meet one of the following MTL requirements:
- 'S' grade or better in MTL or General Studies in Chinese at H1 Level or Mother Tongue Language and Literature at H2 Level
- D7 grade or better in Higher MTL at O-Level
- Pass in MTL Syllabus B at A-Level
Successful applicants who have not met the MTL requirement will be offered Conditional Admission and are required to satisfy this requirement before graduating from SMU.

Applicants who are interested in applying for scholarships can submit the details in the online application for admission. There is no separate application form for scholarships. - Do indicate in the application form if you have special needs.
SMU advocates for the rights of students with special needs, and regards them as equal, integral and contributing members of the student body. Our online application for admission has a section asking applicants to indicate if they have any special needs. Applicants with such special needs are requested to complete this section. - Take note of the important dates.

Yes, you are welcome to apply for admission.
Interviews play an important role in the admissions process and as such, it is in your interest to attend the interview as scheduled. There is a very tight schedule for these interviews, and only in exceptional circumstances (for example, due to illness or National Service commitments) will it be possible to accommodate requests for changes. Law interviews for shortlisted candidates are conducted in end Mar/April. Click here for more information on law interviews and writing tests.

We will consider an applicant's choices in the order of his/her preference. If you are not successful in your first choice, you will still be considered for your other choices in competition with other eligible applicants and subject to the number of places available. For those interested in law, you must indicate law as your first choice in your application.
