SMU believes in providing our students with a transformative education by nurturing a cadre of graduates who can navigate emerging fields of knowledge, possess the agility to master multiple disciplines, and adopt an integrative approach to reframing and addressing challenges.
Established in 2022, the College of Integrative Studies (CIS) is SMU’s seventh School and plays a pivotal role in helping students traverse the disciplinary areas associated with the other SMU Schools – Accountancy, Business, Economics, Computing, Law and Social Sciences.
The CIS is different in that it emphasises the importance of integrating ideas and perspectives across disciplines to derive new solutions in areas related to SMU’s Strategic Priorities. The College aims to nurture graduates who will confidently navigate the inter-related issues of a complex world, find solutions beyond a single discipline or traditional paradigm, and contribute to industry and society in meaningful ways.
Choose A Degree Programme
Deferred Declaration Of Degree
A one-year introduction to the different degree programmes that SMU has to offer. Students enjoy the flexibility to explore their interests and engage in self-directed learning, enabling an informed decision on the destination degree programme. On admission, students can reserve seats in up to 2 degree programmes across SMU Schools, including the Bachelor of Integrative Studies (BIS).
Bachelor Of Integrative Studies | Individualised Major
Students with a passion and aptitude for interdisciplinary problem-solving and a bold desire to chart their own paths can enroll in this programme to design and individualise their major.
Individualised Second Major
Students who wish to take advantage of the individualised programme that the College offers, but who would like to pursue a first major in another SMU School can still take advantage of our offerings through an Individualised Second Major.
Postgraduate Research Programmes
The CIS offers two postgraduate research programmes: an MPhil and a PhD in Asian Urbanisms. These programmes build on the observation that as Asia urbanises at a speed and scale never before seen, the scholarly study of cities needs to evolve as well.
