About the Financial Award
Giving back and serving the community has been one of the founding principles of SMU. SMU is the first local university that introduced community service as a compulsory graduation requirement. Mrs Ruth Chiang, the pioneer Director of the Office of Career Services, was charged with developing the community service component for students, stretching them even beyond our borders. With growing emphasis on service learning and community engagement, SMU set up the Centre for Social Responsibility in December 2010. In the spirit of giving back to community, Ruth would like to do her part in empowering students to work with the less privileged in Cambodia, especially in education and training. The return on this “investment” is also to help SMU students appreciate cultural differences, learn from the beneficiaries and hone their organisation and management skills.
