"SMU has helped me grow into a more confident, independent, and open-minded individual, willing to embrace new challenges. From meaningful friendships and inspiring professors to leadership opportunities, internships, and international experiences, every opportunity has helped me grow into a more well-rounded individual."

Why did you choose to come to SMU?

I chose SMU because I wanted a university that would challenge me beyond academics. I was drawn to SMU's seminar-style classes where students are encouraged to participate instead of simply listening to lectures. As someone who enjoys discussing ideas and learning from different perspectives, I felt this environment would help me grow both academically and personally. Another reason was the interdisciplinary nature of the Politics, Law and Economics (PLE) programme. I knew I was interested in Law and Economics, but I didn't want to limit myself to a single discipline. PLE allows me to understand complex issues through multiple lenses, which was exactly what I was looking for. SMU's support for student-athletes also gave me confidence that I could continue balancing both Sports and Academics well.

What is your 2nd major and why did you choose this particular 2nd major?

My second major is in Legal Studies. I chose it because I have always been interested in the law and wanted to deepen my understanding beyond the legal perspectives covered in the PLE curriculum. Legal Studies allows me to explore how legal principles operate in practice, while developing skills such as legal reasoning, critical analysis, and structured argumentation. As I became more exposed to legal issues through my coursework and internship experiences, my interest in the field grew even stronger. Pursuing a second major in Legal Studies has allowed me to build a stronger foundation in an area that aligns closely with my long-term interest in law and regulation.

What advice would you give to prospective students (especially your juniors from high school) who are thinking of applying to SMU?

My advice would be to approach SMU with a willingness to explore and take initiative. Beyond academics, there are many opportunities to grow through involvement in student activities, internships, and interactions with people from diverse backgrounds. Making the effort to engage in these experiences can help you develop new perspectives and build meaningful connections. It is also important to be patient with yourself. You do not need to have everything planned out from the beginning and it is normal for your interests and goals to change over time. Stay open to learning, be proactive in seeking opportunities and make the most of your time in university by actively shaping your own experience.
