Why did you choose to come to SMU?
SMU’s seminar style approach was definitely one of the main reasons as it ensures that learning is a two-way conversation. Through modules such as Big Questions where everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the conversation while needing to think on the spot at times, we get to see how various perspectives beyond our personal believes and understanding can enrich how we perceive situations and make decisions in both our academic and personal lives.
In addition, SMU’s central city campus offered unmatched convenience and connectivity to industry partners and internship opportunities, allowing me to gain real-world experience even during the school term.
The strong emphasis on project-based learning meant that from Year 1, I was already learning to collaborate, lead and communicate which that are incredibly important in today’s workplace. Beyond academics, the close-knit student community and accessible faculty made it easy to seek help, build lasting friendships, and grow in a supportive environment. All of these factors made SMU stand out as a university that doesn’t just equip you with knowledge, but helps you apply it meaningfully.
Why did you choose your field of study / degree programme?
SMU IS provided a perfect bridge between honing my technical abilities and creating solutions that make real world impact. SMU’s curriculum, which involves immersing ourselves in projects from the start, allow us to not only better explore and understand our technical strengths and areas to improve on, but also be more confident in working with different groups and stakeholders.
In addition, there are numerous clubs within SMU SCIS and SMU as a whole that provides opportunities to explore various technological roles such as .Hack for software engineering or BIA for Data Science and Analytics. They provide not just an open door to a safe space to explore more about the various opportunities possible in computing, but also a vibrant community where everyone has a shared interest.
How has the SMU scholarship benefitted you, not just monetarily but also in terms of your personal development?
I believe that the scholarship has not only relieved financial pressure from my family, but also motivated me to continuously strive for excellence in both academics and character. Being part of the SMU scholar community has given me access to networking opportunities, leadership workshops, and events that broaden my perspectives beyond the classroom. It also instilled in me a sense of responsibility to give back and represent the university well, whether through mentoring juniors or participating in community initiatives. Overall, it has shaped me into a more confident, grounded, and purpose-driven individual.
