About the Financial Award
The SMU Student Emergency Financial Grant is a one-off emergency financial grant by the University to assist full-time undergraduate students facing unforeseen financial crisis and who would require interim financial assistance while their families seek for long-term solutions to meet their financial needs.
Eligibility Criteria
- Full-time undergraduate student
Facing sudden and unforeseen financial difficulties such as:
1. Medical-related emergencies
Medical expenses not covered by insurance (e.g., hospitalization, surgery, medication)2. Loss of income / family support
Essential living expenses due to sudden loss of family income (e.g., rent, utilities, groceries)
Loss of income due to incapacitation of the family breadwinner
Retrenchment of the family breadwinner3. Bereavement-related costs
Funeral expenses for immediate family4. Housing emergencies
Emergency housing costs (e.g., eviction, urgent relocation)- Priority for students with evidence of financial hardship (not exceeding the gross monthly household per capita income in accordance with the prevailing income level for government-funded bursaries)
Tenure and Benefits
- Up to $2,000 (depending on level of financial difficulties)
- Tenable for one year of study
Conditions of Award
- The Recipient must submit a bursary application to validate their household income
- The applicant may receive the grant only once during a single academic year
