About the Donor
The Chew Kim Yong Endowed Bursary is established by the family of Mr Koh Lian Chye and Mdm Chew Ee Leng. Their son, Mr Lewis Koh Ren Yi (BBM, 2009), daughter, Ms Celine Koh Zhi Ying (BSc(SocSc), 2010) and son-in-law, Mr Tan Da Qing Steven (BBM, 2008) are all proud alumni of SMU.
Mr Chew Kim Yong is the late father of Mdm Chew. He came from China in his teens and was unable to pursue higher education due to limited family finances. As such, he firmly believed that quality education should be accessible to all deserving students, especially those from financially challenged backgrounds. He wished to set up an education fund to assist underprivileged students but was unable to achieve it in his lifetime. This Bursary is thus set up by Mdm Chew and Mr Koh to honour his wish and inspire their children to give back to the same experiences that have shaped them during their SMU days.
