About the Financial Award

Established in 2023, the James Lim and May Ling Endowed Study Award is available to full-time undergraduates from School of Economics at the Singapore Management University.  It aims to support the University's efforts in providing greater access to a quality university education for undergraduates, with demonstrated financial needs to achieve academic excellence.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time undergraduates enrolled in School of Economics
  • Singapore Citizens or Malaysian Citizens
  • With demonstrated evidence of family financial neediness (with gross monthly household per capita income in accordance with the prevailing guidelines to qualify for government bursaries)

Benefits

  • $8,000 per year (towards annual subsidised tuition fees)
  • Tenable for one year of study
  • May be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.

Application

Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor

Mr James Lim came to Singapore from Malaysia for his undergraduate studies. He was the former Executive Vice President & President of Greater Asia at BD (Becton Dickinson & Co.), the first Asian to take such a senior leadership role in BD. He stayed in BD for over 28 years, retiring in September 2022.

Mr Lim and his wife May Ling believe in empowering people with the skills and resources they need to create a positive impact in their communities and beyond. Their vision is to create a world where everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources, regardless of their background or circumstances. Through this initiative, they hope to develop the next generation of leaders who can make a difference in their communities and the world around them.

Mr Lim’s commitment to giving back to the community is a testament to his dedication to creating a better world for all. His personal philosophy of integrity, innovation, passion, and dedication is reflected not only in his business success but also in his family, and in his efforts to make a positive impact on the society we live in.
