About the Financial Award
Established in 2016, the Lim Cheng Eng Bursary seeks to assist financially needy full-time Singaporean undergraduates at the Singapore Management University to achieve academic excellence.
Eligibility Criteria
- Full-time undergraduates enrolled in any degree programme
- Singapore Citizens
- With demonstrated financial needs (gross monthly household per capita income not exceeding $1,900)
Tenure and Benefits
- $6,000 (towards subsidised tuition fee)
- Tenable for one year of study
- May be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.
Application
Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor
Lim Cheng Eng was born in the Anxi county of Fujian province in 1941. He came to Singapore as a child in 1947. He completed his primary education at the former Chinese Industrial and Commercial Continuation School (today’s Gongshang Primary School) in 1955. In 1961, he graduated from The Chinese High School (today’s Hwa Chong Institution). In 1967, he graduated from the chemistry facility of Nanyang University, and thereafter taught at the Huayi Government Chinese Middle School (today’s Hua Yi Secondary School) for 3 years.
In 1968, his father and uncles, along with 3 hometown relatives set up Hock Lam Pte Ltd to import White Rabbit Milk Candy and other well known food products. Lim departed from his education career and joined the company. He eventually took over his father’s business, and made Hock Lam a prosperous venture with his fellow partners.
Lim Cheng Eng has maintained a lifelong devotion to his alma mater, where he served as the Chairman of the Combined Class Reunion (Classes of 1960 – 1969) of Nanyang University.
In 2010, he made a personal donation, and with a 1:1.5 sponsorship from the government, raised a combined $600,000 to set up a student bursary fund under his name. In recognition of his dedication to his alumni community, Nanyang Technological University presented him the Nanyang Alumni Service Award in 2012.
Lim Cheng Eng also wears several hats in key community and trade organisations in Singapore. In 1988, Lim Cheng Eng joined the Singapore Lim See Tai Chong Soo clan association, and dedicated himself to the welfare of his kin. In 2013, he became the association’s chairman. Besides being an honorary committee member of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and the President of the Singapore Toys & Confectionery Dealers’ Association, Lim has also been elected the 27th President of the Singapore-China Business Association in 2013.
In his inauguration ceremony speech, Lim pointed to a clear path for the Association: “Business associations and organisations should grow with our time, and work in close tandem with the prevailing corporate culture. Our business communities should put our focus on people. While we help our members to seek sustainable growth and business opportunities, we should not lose sight of promoting the cultural development within our society.”
An altruist passionate about the community services, Lim has assumed important positions in community organisations, and currently serves as the honorary Chairman of the Bukit Timah Community Centre’s management committee, as well as the Chairman of the community centre’s calligraphy society. In recognition of his public service spirit, Mr. Lim was deservedly conferred the Public Service Medal (PBM) by the President in 2003, as well as the Public Service Star (BBM) in 2010.
