About the Financial Award

Established in 2012 and funded from the proceeds of an endowed sum received from collective donors in memory of the late Dr Toh Chin Chye, the Toh Chin Chye Bursary aims to provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduate students at the Singapore Management University who would have otherwise been deprived of a university education due to difficult family financial circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time first year undergraduates in any degree programme
  • Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Satisfactory academic results
  • With demonstrated financial needs (with gross monthly household income not exceeding the prevailing income tiers to qualify for government bursaries)
  • Preference for students with active CCA or community involvement with proven leadership qualities.

Tenure and Benefits

  • $5,000 per year (towards subsidised tuition fee)
  • Tenable for up to three years of study.
  • May be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.

Tuition Grant Scheme

  • The recipients are required to take advantage of the Tuition Grant Scheme (TGS) provided by the Singapore Government for subsidised education.
  • Under the TGS, non-Singaporean recipients (including Singapore Permanent Residents) will be contractually obliged to work for Singapore-based companies for 3 years upon graduation.

Application

Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor

Dr Toh, a Founding Father of modern Singapore was a selfless, fearless individual who had championed the rights of the poor, the needy and the underprivileged in Singapore, especially with regard to their right to a better education and thence a better life and society.  The Toh Chin Chye Bursary has been established in his memory, to provide a well-rounded tertiary education to successive generations of undergraduates who because of personal financial circumstances, would otherwise have had their education terminated at junior college level.
