About the Donor
In 1819, following the founding of modern Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles, many Chinese migrants arrived in search of job opportunities. While some eventually returned home, many chose to settle permanently, building their fortunes as entrepreneurs. During the British colonial era, basic needs such as education and healthcare were often unmet. In response, the Chinese community came together to raise funds and establish trusts to build schools, hospitals, and cemeteries, laying the foundation for a better future for their descendants.
In 1905, the Cantonese community established Yeung Ching School (养正学校) in Chinatown to provide primary education. The name “养正” signifies the nurturing of young minds with proper values. To ensure the school’s financial sustainability, properties were acquired in 1924 to generate rental income and support operational expenses.
In 1988, the school became a government-aided institution under the Ministry of Education. It was relocated to Serangoon and renamed Yangzheng Primary School
(养正小学).
In 1990, the Singapore courts empowered the trustees to convert the Yeung Ching School Fund into the Yeung Ching Foundation, now known as the Yangzheng Foundation, to expand its contributions to society.
The Foundation’s mission is to promote, foster, and improve education in Singapore. It provides financial support to needy students and contributes to charitable organizations that aid in the social development of the community. Over the years, many schools, universities, hospitals, and charities have benefited from the Foundation’s generosity—continuing a proud legacy of community care and educational advancement.
