About the Award
About the Award Supported by the proceeds from an endowed contribution, the Vangat Ramayah Memorial Prize for Commercial Law is established to honour the memory of the late Mr Vangat Ramayah, who was an excellent lawyer and arbitrator. The Prize seeks to motivate and spur exceptional students' talents from the Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor programmes offered by the Yong Pung How School of Law (YPHSL) at the Singapore Management University to greater heights of academic excellence.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Prize will be awarded annually to the law student who has excelled across the following modules, collectively referred to as Commercial Law Courses, offered by YPHSL:
- Contract Law
- Law of Torts
- Law of Business Organisations
- Corporate Law
- Factors considered include (but not limited to) the overall course grade and any other factors which demonstrate the student’s all-rounded abilities.
The Prize will only be given if there is a candidate of sufficient merit.

About the donor
The late Mr Vangat Ramayah was a successful lawyer and arbitrator. In the course of his career, he was a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, a member of the Law Reform Committee of the Singapore Academy of Law, a Magistrate, Deputy Registrar and Coroner in the Subordinate Courts, a Judge Advocate as well as serving as the President of the General Court Martial in SAF. He also sat as Chairman of the Singapore Law Society's Review and Infrastructure sub-Committee and the Arbitration Appointments Committee of the Law Society's Arbitration Scheme, the Audit and Remuneration Committees and was also the Vice Chairman of the Maritime Law Committee of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association.
Mr Ramayah was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the public listed Popular Holdings Ltd. Mr Ramayah was a highly sought after arbitrator in commercial, transnational, maritime and marine construction disputes and had been appointed to the panel of various arbitral institutions. He was the author of the book, Ship Finance in Singapore and Malaysia (Butterworths, 2002).
This Award is made possible from an endowed contribution received by Mrs Renuga Vangat, in memory of the late Mr Vangat Ramayah and the invaluable contributions he made to the legal sector as a commercial lawyer and arbitrator.
