About the Financial Award

Supported by Wilmar International Limited and esblished in 2014, the Wilmar Overseas Internship Grant seeks to motivate students to be exposed to the emerging economies of the world, and to inculcate in them a pioneering spirit, entrepreneurship vision and sharp business acumen.  The grant is to be used for the recipient's travel and cost of living expenses during his/her overseas internship attachment in the selected markets.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time undergraduates of any nationality
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00
  • Preference will be given to students enrolled in the International Trading Track.
  • Internships must be with SMU-approved companies in the following country/region:
    • People’s Republic of China
    • Africa
    • Eastern Europe/Russia
    • Central Asia
  • Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Not concurrently in receipt of other forms of financial assistance for the purpose of the internship.

# Singaporeans/Permanent Residents are to first review funding opportunities from the Young Talent Programme (the component for Market Immersion through overseas exchanges and internships) by offered by IE Singapore.  Returning international students to their home countries will not be eligible.  If in doubt, please consult the SMU Career Counsellors at the Dato’ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre.

Tenure and Benefits

  • Each student is entitled to receive the grant only once during his or her course of study at the University.
  • The grant will fund the student’s airfare, visa, travel insurance plus a $300 weekly allowance for up to 10 weeks.
  • The grant is only applicable to locations for which no other sources of financial support are available.
  • The grant will be adjusted if the attachment duration is shortened due to unforeseen circumstances.
