Law
The biggest challenge you faced in the first year of university and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I faced in the first year of university was imposter syndrome! Everyone in law school has excelled in their studies, and I remember receiving my first mid-term test grade and thinking oh no… am I in the wrong place? However, I soon learnt that it was by making friends, finding a supportive community, and assimilating into the school (such as its facilities, like the library!) that I could ease into the environment. Fortunately, by the end of the first year, I had made it into the Dean’s List! From my earlier struggle and self-doubt, I learnt that the biggest service you can to for yourself is to avoid comparing yourself to your peers, and enjoy university life as a conduit to doing well in studies.
Why did you choose your field of study / degree programme?
Before applying for law school, I happened to join a small moot competition, which simulates a court proceeding. Through this small competition, I had a glimpse into law, and I saw that abstract ideas (e.g. ‘when is a promise is binding?’) could be distilled into elements (e.g. the elements of contract formation). I wanted to learn more about law, and the different facets of life that it covers, which guided my decision in applying for this degree.
What is your favourite hangout spot/place to chill after a long day of classes?
After a long day of classes, I like to head to Level 5 of the Law library (Kwa Geok Choo Library). I like its views of Fort Canning, especially as the sun is setting. As a bonus, when it rains, you can see the raindrops hit the glass dome windows, which I find especially therapeutic.
