Please share a key highlight of your student life in SMU.
I have made many good friends and also had many intellectual conversations during my time at SMU Economics Intelligence Club. It is also the reason why I stepped up, first as Desk Director for Asia Pacific in 2024, and later as Honorary Finance Secretary in 2025. The club has grown my research ability in helping sharpen my thinking and summarising skills, and also allowed me to better learn more about political and economic events taking place in all parts of the world. It has helped me become more well read, and has probably contributed to the success of some of my internship applications!
Please share with us your most recent or your favourite global experience.
My favourite global experience was summer school in Peking University, Beijing, China. Peking University is one of the best universities in the world. On top of wanting to learn from esteemed professors and faculty, as a social sciences student pursuing Politics, Law and Economics in SMU, it is apt that I study courses such as Chinese Politics and Public Policy in Beijing itself, where political decisions are made. The faculty would also be able to supplement the slides with their personal knowledge and experience to make the lesson material more relevant and understandable.
The absolute highlight of your experience was the field trips to Xiaomi, Sina, Renewable Energy Power Plant and also a Hydrogen Demonstration Plant! Learning was brought outside of the classroom and it was easier to connect theory with application through the visits. I also enjoyed cultural activities such as visits to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall.
What advice would you give to prospective students who are thinking of applying to SMU?
Come for the open house and speak to seniors to see if SMU is the right fit for you. I would say though, that the diversity of course options and second majors in SMU means there is something for everyone!
