"SMU has spurred me to be more outspoken and to take initiative in sourcing for opportunities outside of academics."

Why did you choose to come to SMU?

Coming from a school specialized in Maths and Science, economics was not something you would expect for a NUS High School graduate to pursue. However, the truly interdisciplinary nature of economics – the combination of politics, social science, psychology drew me towards it. I also have an avid interest in research, having done a few projects in my time in NUS High. SMU is in the forefront of economics research in Asia and this was one of the deciding factors for me. I also preferred a more interactive learning style- away from the typical lecture- tutorial system. SMU’s emphasis on small class sizes and seminar learnings really drew me towards choosing this institution over others.

Please share a key highlight of your student life in SMU.

I joined Project Hearts to Huts as a leader as I am interested in community service and interacting with children. Having previously done tutoring for underprivileged children in Singapore, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try to do the same in a global setting. The recee trip was an amazing experience, as we went around Luang Prabang and saw first-hand how a particular business was driving towards empowering those with disabilities. Despite being physically impaired and on wheelchairs, the employees do handicrafts, crochets and even presented their creations in an international fashion fair. This made me realize how privileged I am, and how I should be thankful for every blessing that I have. It also spurred me to pursue what I am passionate about, like how the employees were persevering despite their physical challenges.

How has your SMU scholarship benefitted you, not just monetarily but also in terms of your personal development?

The SMU Merit Scholarship and Student Support Centre provided me with opportunities such as scholar networking sessions, which got me exposed to how seniors planned their SMU life – some focused on attaining good grades while others went for various experiences and leadership positions. Such sessions have encouraged me to plan my SMU academic journey better too, so that I can fully maximize the opportunities available!
