About the Financial Award

Established in 2014, The Cocoa Trees Endowed Bursary aims to provide financial support to full-time undergraduates from the School of Economics at the Singapore Management University and to motivate them to achieve all-round excellence.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time undergraduates from the School of Economics
  • Preference for Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Gross monthly per capita household income not exceeding $1,900
  • Priority will be given to students with evidence of financial hardship

Tenure and Benefits

  • $8,000 per annum (towards subsidised tuition fee)
  • Tenable for one year of study

Conditions of Award

  • May be in concurrent receipt of a government bursary, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria
  • The Recipient must not hold any other awards of similar nature during the tenure of the Award, except with the prior written approval of the University

Application

Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor

Cocoa Trees Endowed Bursary is made possible by the kind gift of Mr Paul Loo Lip Giam to provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduates who are pursuing Economics studies at SMU.  Mr Loo, award winner of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of 2013 Singapore, is the Group CEO of FOCUS Network Agencies Singapore, which owns and operates ‘The Cocoa Trees’ chocolates retail chain.  Founded in 1991, FNA has grown over the past 22 years to become an undisputed leader in the marketing and distributorship of premier chocolate brands in both Singapore and the Asia Pacific region.
