About the Financial Award

Established in 2025, the Margaret Chan-Lien International Exchange Scholarship is available to full-time undergraduates at the Singapore Management University.  It seeks to support students, with demonstrated financial needs, to embark on a term of study abroad with one of the University's partner universities in and outside Asia, to allow them to have a more well-rounded worldview.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Full-time undergraduates enrolled in any degree programme
  • Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Participating in international student exchange programmes with SMU partner universities
  • Good academic results (minimum cumulative GPA 3.00)
  • Evidence of demonstrated financial hardship in the family (with gross monthly household per capita income in accordance with prevailing guidelines to qualify for government bursaries)

Benefits

  • Tenable for the recipient’s one term of study abroad with an SMU partner university.
  • Valued at $5,000 (in Asia) or $10,000 (outside Asia) to fund exchange-related expenses (including air tickets, accommodation, living expenses, visa, insurance, health check-ups/vaccines, and/or study-related expenses).

Application

Applications will be invited through Centre for Global Education and Opportunities' call for exchange applications:

  • February to March (Fall exchange application)
  • July to August (Spring exchange application)

About the Donor

Mrs Margaret Chan-Lien believes in the importance of global exposure as she has personally witnessed the positive impact it has made to close family members. She hopes the exchange scholarship would help our students build independence, resilience, and adaptability and become in-tuned and culturally-aware global citizens with a heightened sense of pride in his/her own country.
