About the Financial Award
The School of Economics (SOE) has established the Professor Winston Koh Endowed Memorial Fund in 2015, in honour of the late Professor Winston Koh, to celebrate his contributions to academia and student life in Singapore Management University (SMU). The Fund will support the Professor Winston Koh Bursary which aims to encourage undergraduates from SOE to strive for academic excellence and to gain a holistic education at SMU.
Eligibility Criteria
- Full-time undergraduates from the School of Economics
- Any nationality
- Good academic results
- Preference for undergraduates who demonstrate leadership qualities and have good community service/CCA records
- With demonstrated financial needs (with gross monthly household income not exceeding the prevailing income tiers to qualify for government bursaries)
Tenure and Benefits
- $5,000 (towards subsidised tuition fee)
- Tenable for one year of study
- May be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.
Application
Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor
With the family of the late Professor Winston Koh, the School of Economics at SMU has established the Professor Winston Koh Endowed Memorial Fund, in honour of the late Professor Winston Koh, to celebrate his contributions to academia and student life in the Singapore Management University. The Fund will support one Professor Winston Koh Bursary in perpetuity and aims to encourage undergraduates from the School of Economics to strive for academic excellence and to gain a holistic education at SMU.
Professor Winston Koh came from a financially challenged background and demonstrated that with hard work, determination and perseverance, one can achieve excellence. He was awarded the PSC scholarship to read Economics at University of Cambridge, graduating with Double First Class Honours, and subsequently obtained a PhD in Economics from Princeton University at age 25. Professor Koh was also awarded the SMU’s Lee Kuan Yew Fellowship for Research Excellence in 2003.
