About the Financial Award
Established in 2021, the Shaila Sunshine Bursary is available to full-time undergraduates at the Singapore Management University. It is aimed at motivating undergraduates with demonstrated financial needs to encourage them through challenging times and to spur them on to greater heights of academic excellence.
Eligibility Criteria
- Full-time first year undergraduates enrolled in any degree programme
- Singapore Citizens
- Demonstrated evidence of family financial hardships (with gross monthly household per capita income in accordance with prevailing guidelines to qualify for government bursaries)
Benefits
- $8,000 per year (towards subsidised tuition fee)
- Tenable for up to four years of study, subject to the recipient’s continued observance of the eligibility criteria and the terms and conditions of award.
- May be in concurrent receipt of another bursary for cash allowance, subject to fulfilment of its eligibility criteria.
Application
Shortlisting of candidates for consideration will be from the list of applicants applying for SMU-administered bursaries in the year of award.

About the Donor
A Singapore citizen, Mrs Shaila Jain and her husband, Mr Rajan Jain set up the Sunshine Trust to help the less fortunate. On top of that, they also use their own funds to bring a ray of hope and a beam of sunshine to help the financially needy. In fact, the family have also been already helping the less fortunate in Singapore and beyond for more than three decades.
With her background as a teacher and her skills as an artist, Ms Shaila Jain has been instrumental to positive change in the community. The newly established bursary is another example of her intentions. The Shaila Sunshine Bursary is available to full time Singapore undergraduates at the Singapore Management University. This is an extension of Mrs Jain's desire to motivate and encourage undergraduate students to achieve greater heights of academic and practical excellence.
Mrs Jain hopes that in the future, recipients of these bursaries will learn to pay forward and help others who are less privileged.
