About the Award

Established in 2015 and funded from the proceeds of the Joe Grimberg Mooting Fund, the following prizes seek to motivate exceptional Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor students from within the International Moots Programme in the Yong Pung How School of Law (YPHSL) at the Singapore Management University and spur them to greater heights of academic excellence.

  • Best Student in International Moots 1
  • Top Oralist in International Moots 2

Eligibility Criteria

  • The Joe Grimberg Top Advocate Prizes are given out to two best students within the International Moots Programme in YPHSL.
  • Factors considered include (but not limited to) the overall course grade and any other factors which demonstrate the student’s all-rounded abilities.

The Prizes will only be given if there are candidates of sufficient merit.

  • Top Oralist in International Moots 2 – Certificate and $1,500 Cash Prize

About the Donor

Joseph Grimberg joined Drew & Napier in 1957 and was made a Partner in 1967. He was Senior Partner from 1967 to 1987. He was appointed Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court, Singapore, in 1987. In 1989, he re-joined Drew & Napier as a Consultant.

He was one of the first lawyers to be appointed Senior Counsel in Singapore.

He has an active practice as Arbitrator and Mediator in a wide variety of disputes.

In the course of his career, Joe Grimberg has been involved in, or presided over, a wide spectrum of general and commercial cases, including representation of the President of the Republic of Singapore in a Constitutional Reference where an issue of interpretation of the Constitution was referred for determination (the only case of its kind so far referred to the Constitutional Court); major banking, shipping, defamation, intellectual property, corporate, insolvency and property cases.

Joe Grimberg has, since re-joining Drew & Napier as a Consultant in 1989, presided as arbitrator in both domestic and international arbitrations, administered by the ICC Paris, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration. He has also arbitrated in numerous non-administered domestic arbitrations and is regularly engaged as a mediator in disputes referred to the Singapore Mediation Centre.
