About the Award
Established by various donors, the Michael Hwang Prize is given to the top law student in International Commercial Arbitration. The purpose of the Award is to inspire and motivate exceptional students' talents from the Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor programmes offered by the Yong Pung How School of Law (YPHSL) at the Singapore Management University, and to spur them to greater heights of academic excellence.
The Prize will be presented at a University-level event.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Prize will be given to the top law student in International Commercial Arbitration, an elective course offered by YPHSL.
- Factors considered include (but not limited to) the overall course grade and any other factors which demonstrate the student’s all-rounded abilities.
The Prize will only be given if there is a candidate of sufficient merit.

About the Donors
This Prize is made possible from the proceeds of an endowed sum of $50,000.
The Michael Hwang Prize for the Top Student in International Commercial Arbitration is supported by a group of Michael Hwang SC's former pupils, colleagues and interns who have had the privilege of learning from him. They wanted to honour him as their mentor, and also dedicate this award to Michael Hwang SC, who is Asia's leading expert in the field of international commercial arbitration.
