If you are a curious person who loves to know more through conversation and discussion, this is the place to be.

Why did you choose to join SMU?

When I applied to join SMU in 2012, the School of Law was only 5 years old. I wanted to be part of a young and vibrant academic community and grow with it. The School of Law celebrated its 10th birthday a few years back and is now turning 13! It’s incredible how much the School of Law has grown and I’m proud to be part of that process.

Classes/Modules you currently teach and Research Areas of Interest

I teach the Law of Property and the Law of Equity and Trusts to Years 2 and 4 law students, respectively. I also teach Business Law to freshies from the other schools. So that’s almost the entire range of students at different stages of their university life. I research mainly on private law, particularly property, trust, unjust enrichment and remedies. I also dabble in animal law, my pet subject.

A highlight of your time in SMU so far?

I think I’m a natural at making students laugh in class. Often my jokes or funny comments simply come out randomly. There’s humour in everything if we bother to look hard enough. For the third year in a row, law students have voted me the Funniest Professor. That’s certainly a recognition that I care about more than many others.

What is your favourite food on/around campus?

I’m a great fan of the many food offerings at the food court (Koufu). If I want to avoid a crowd, Boyle’s Coffee & Love Bites below the Li Ka Shing Library is a good option. There is also Ayam Penyet at the School of Law which I visit several times in a week!
