"SMU has given me the chance to learn not just in class, but from the people I've met and the experiences I've had along the way. Those experiences taught me that the best opportunities often come from stepping outside my comfort zone and saying yes."

Please share with us your most recent or your favourite global experience

Last summer I went on a summer programme in the University of Cambridge in the UK. Truly one of the best experiences I've had during uni! You really start appreciating life more when you are placed in a position with so much exposure to different cultures, ideas, opinions, and people. To sum up the best thing this programme has benefitted me - it’s given me new perspectives. Which I think is invaluable and one of the best things I could have walked away from the programme with.

How has the scholarship benefitted you, not just monetarily but also in terms of your personal development?

Beyond the financial support, the scholarship gave me the chance to live and study in a new country, which pushed me to grow more independent and adaptable than I ever would have at home. It also gave me the freedom to focus on making the most of university, from my studies to clubs, overseas programmes, and internships, without worrying as much about finances which I’m beyond grateful for. Being a scholar has also motivated me to keep challenging myself, because I want to make the most of the opportunity I've been given.

What advice would you give to prospective students (especially your juniors from high school) who are thinking of applying to SMU?

Moving to a new country for university is a big step, and it is not easy. I came from Indonesia not really knowing what to expect, and the first year was tough, especially being away from my family. But it does get better with time, and looking back, I'm glad I took the leap. My biggest piece of advice is to make the most of what SMU offers: join clubs, go for overseas programmes, reach out for internships, and say yes to opportunities even when they feel outside your comfort zone. You won't enjoy every single one of them, but you'll learn something from each. Also, look into scholarships early, because they can make studying abroad much more manageable.
