Why did you choose to come to SMU?
I appreciated the unique learning experience at SMU that offered depth, breadth and flexibility in learning. The guaranteed second major allowed me to explore disciplines outside my SOSS major, while the seminar style classes were more interactive, allowing me to know my profs better while absorbing their teachings more effectively. The larger three-hour blocks of class worked well for me too as I had intentions to stack part-time jobs and internships while studying.
I was also drawn to the way SMU students carried themselves when I visited the SMU open house. I noticed that the seniors were well-spoken, enterprising and driven to pursue their passions. Many of them also mentioned the heavy support SMU provided them through seed funding, mentorship and more. It gave me some reassurance that whatever I wanted to pursue, SMU will always have my back.
What is your 2nd major and why did you choose this particular 2nd major?
My second major is in sustainability management under the School of Business. I chose a sustainability-related major because I thought that it would completement my Sociology major well, especially given my career aspirations to land in sustainability/ ESG-related roles. SOSS also offers a similar Sustainable Societies major, but I wanted to explore sustainability from a corporate perspective and pick up specific hard skills like sustainability reporting, hence the SOB version.
How has SMU’s city location enriched your university experience?
SMU’s central location makes very convenient to access virtually anything. My CCA, Athletics can easy clock a five to seven kilometre run to Marina Bay Sands or Gardens by the Bay. My current internship at Telok Ayer is also 15 minutes away from SMU, making it easy to travel between the two locations for both work and classes. There are also lots of great food spots around to get a good meal after a long day of school!
What advice would you give to prospective students (especially your juniors from high school) who are thinking of applying to SMU?
Take that leap of faith and apply to SMU! Start working on your application early; give yourself ample time to ensure it can best reflect your strengths and competencies.
