"What ultimately drew me to SMU was its seminar-style pedagogy and the many opportunities to pursue internships and overseas experiences. I was particularly attracted to how SMU encourages students to gain industry exposure early, providing career guidance and numerous opportunities to connect with industry professionals."

Why did you choose your field of study / degree programme?

I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Business Management because I enjoy solving complex problems and understanding how businesses create value. Throughout my time in IB, I found myself drawn to analysing real-world business issues and thinking about how organisations could improve their strategies and operations.

At SMU, I decided to major in Strategic Management as it allows me to explore a wide range of business functions while developing structured problem-solving and decision-making skills. I was particularly drawn to the emphasis on analysing industries, understanding competitive dynamics, and crafting practical solutions to business challenges. Through case competitions, internships, and classroom discussions, I've been able to apply these concepts to real companies, which has further reinforced my passion for strategy and consulting.

What is your favourite spot on campus?

Definitely the Li Ka Shing Library. I love studying there because it's bright, the views are amazing, and it has a really nice atmosphere. Whether I'm preparing for class, working on a case, or just catching up with friends between lessons, it's probably where I spend most of my time on campus.

Name your favourite class/mod at SMU so far, and why:

Marketing has definitely been my favourite module so far. I enjoyed learning about consumer behaviour and branding, but what made the module especially memorable was the group project. We analysed Saizeriya's marketing strategy and even wore Saizeriya aprons during our presentation to make it more engaging. It was a fun experience that showed me how creativity and business can go hand in hand.

Any tips for your IB juniors to keep up to speed to life in SMU?

My biggest advice is to be proactive from the very beginning. Attend orientation events, step out of your comfort zone, and don't be afraid to explore different CCAs, leadership opportunities, networking events, and competitions. While academics are important, classes are only one part of your university experience.

Looking back, some of my most memorable experiences at SMU happened outside the classroom. Whether it was joining CCAs, attending networking events, participating in events like Waikiki, or serving as an orientation facilitator, these experiences allowed me to build meaningful friendships, develop new skills, and grow both personally and professionally. University is ultimately what you make of it, so make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.
