"I was afraid to speak up because of my introverted nature and because I thought people would judge me for what I say. However, SMU’s teaching style made me step out of my comfort zone, becoming more willing to speak up and express my thoughts."

Why did you choose to come to SMU?

I chose SMU for three primary reasons: its specialised focus on business education, its distinctive interactive pedagogy, and its highly accessible location.

Firstly, as a specialised institution, I believe SMU can impart to me deeper knowledge in the business area compared to traditional universities that offer a wide range of courses. I believe this will allow me to develop a stronger competitive edge.

Secondly, SMU’s seminar-style learning model actively encourages students to articulate their ideas and drive meaningful classroom discussions. This environment is ideal for sharpening my communication and public speaking skills, both of which are critical for success in the modern workforce.

Lastly, the campus’s central location offers a highly reasonable commute from my home, allowing me to cut down on costs as I do not have to rent a dormitory.

How has SMU’s city location enriched your university experience?

Located in the city center, SMU provides convenience in travelling to the business district and nearby malls to meet up with friends easily. Furthermore, after a long day at school, one can easily get food due to the plethora of food options available from surrounding malls.

What advice would you give to prospective students (especially your juniors from IB) who are thinking of applying to SMU?

Although SMU lacks the traditional dorm life compared to NTU and NUS, there are still numerous events one can participate in. Also, do not worry if you start of slow because of your introverted nature; over the course of the degree, you will naturally embrace the interactive pedagogy.
