Why did you choose to come to SMU?
I chose to come to SMU because it offers a learning environment that aligns closely with how I learn best and how I hope to grow. Its central location makes it highly accessible and places students in the heart of Singapore’s business district, which naturally creates more opportunities to observe and engage with industry activity.
What stood out to me most was SMU’s small class size and interactive teaching style. Instead of passive lectures, classes are highly discussion-based, which makes learning more engaging and helps me understand concepts more deeply through dialogue and participation. The close interaction with professors also makes it easier to clarify doubts and stay involved in the learning process.
I was also drawn to SMU’s strong emphasis on communication and presentation skills. I see this as an important part of becoming not just knowledgeable but also expressing ideas clearly and confidently. In addition, the overseas exchange opportunities offered by SMU are something I really value, as they allow students to broaden their perspectives and gain exposure to different cultures and academic environments.
Why did you choose your field of study / degree programme?
Coming from a science background in high school, many people naturally assumed I would continue pursuing a science-related degree. However, as I began reflecting more on my interests, I took a step back and asked myself an important question: “Was this truly the field I was most passionate about?” Clearly, the answer was “No”.
I realised that I was far more fascinated by how societies function, how economies evolve, and how individuals, businesses, and governments interact and influence one another. Whether it’s inflation, international trade, financial markets, or public policy, Economics provides a framework for understanding the forces that shape our daily lives. I enjoy seeing the connections between classroom concepts and real-world events because it makes learning feel relevant and meaningful. It just naturally led me to Economics.
At the same time, I’ve always enjoyed mathematics and analytical thinking. Economics combines quantitative analysis with real-world applications, allowing me to solve problems while understanding the bigger picture behind the numbers.
Overall, Economics has given me a new way of seeing the world. Every concept I learn helps me better understand the society and economy we live in, and that is what continues to motivate my interest in the field.
What advice would you give to prospective students (especially your juniors from high school) who are thinking of applying to SMU?
I would say: “Do not hesitate to choose SMU, because it offers so much more than you may initially imagine.”
When I first considered SMU, I knew it was a strong university academically, but I did not fully realise how much I would grow through the experiences beyond the classroom. SMU’s interactive learning environment, emphasis on communication, and close connection with industries provide students with countless opportunities to challenge themselves, discover their interests, and prepare for the real world.
What makes SMU special is the people you meet and the opportunities you create for yourself. Whether it is working on projects with diverse teammates, learning from supportive professors, participating in overseas programme, or getting involved in different communities, SMU constantly encourages you to step beyond your comfort zone and grow.
Of course, university life will come with challenges, but SMU is a place where you will find the support and encouragement to navigate your journey. Looking back, choosing SMU was one of the best decisions I have made, and I hope future students will come with an open mind and be ready to explore, learn, and create a journey that is uniquely their own.
