FOUR SMU STUDENTS AWARDED MARITIMEONE SCHOLARSHIP

Four SMU undergraduates from SMU’s Maritime Economics Track (MET) and Maritime Business Operations Track (MBOT) are among 42 MaritimeONE scholarship recipients who have been conferred the MaritimeONE Scholarship this year.

They are:

•    Ms Foong Lai Yi, year 3, School of Economics (awarded by BW Maritime)

•    Ms Vivian Tay Ya Wen, year 4, Lee Kong Chian School of Business (awarded by The Fednav)

•    Mr Goh Zhong Hui, year 3, School of Economics (awarded by Singapore Shipping Association)

•    Ms Tan Jing Yi, year 3, School of Economics (awarded by Singapore Shipping Association)

The MaritimeONE Scholarship programme is spearheaded by the Singapore Maritime Foundation as a key initiative to nurture talent for Singapore’s maritime industry through support towards a spectrum of 34 diploma and degree programmes offered here and overseas.

Since 2007, a total of 384 MaritimeONE scholarships worth more than S$10 million have been awarded to outstanding students to pursue courses locally and abroad.  This year, the total scholarship value amounts to over $1 million, thanks to the generous sponsorship by 19 companies across all sectors of the maritime industry, including port, shipping, maritime services and shipyards.

In addition to scholarship money, scholars also stand to gain an exceptional opportunity to take on internship programmes with their respective MaritimeONE scholarship sponsors, as well as participate in platforms such as maritime conferences and networking events, industry learning journeys and educational tours.

Vivian Tay Ya Wen, who is pursuing the MBOT under the Operations Management major at Lee Kong Chian School of Business, said, “I believe the scholarship can empower me to venture out into the unknown and grow even further through the opportunities that come along.”

Goh Zhong Hui, who is pursuing the MET, shared, “The vastness of the maritime industry and its role as one of the pillars of the global economy piqued my interest to pursue a career in this line of work.  As a final year student who is about to begin my career, this scholarship brings exposure and provides a platform for me to connect with like-minded individuals who are eager to excel.”
