SMU LAUDED FOR ITS EXCELLENT ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND GREEN INITIATIVES

SMU was a proud recipient of the Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards (SEAA) – Merit Winner (Public Sector category) - in recognition of its excellent environmental stewardship and green initiatives.

The SEAA scheme is organised by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC), and has become one of the most prestigious environmental award in Singapore and the region today. The awards recognise overall environmental stewardship by organisations and is in support of the Sustainable Singapore Movement, which seeks to rally and inspire everyone to do their part and take action towards environmental initiatives.

The award presentation ceremony, held in conjunction with the SEC Conference Day, took place on 30 August 2018. Mr Sundaravadivelan Selvam, Vice President, Office of Campus Infrastructure and Services (OCIS), received the Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (Public Sector) from Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources.

Mr Sundar said, “We are very pleased to have won the Singapore Environment Achievement Award 2018 in the public sector category. It is a recognition for SMU and its community’s continuous sustainability efforts on various fronts to make our city campus greener. We will continue to foster the engagement with the community to progress in our sustainability journey.”

The judging criteria for the SEAA include assessing the leadership displayed by the company, the real environmental improvements made, as well as the ability of an organisation to establish procedures, train staff and innovate in order to achieve breakthroughs in environmental performance.

The SEC’s Assessment Committee (AC) commended SMU for its holistic environmental initiatives, innovative engineering approach and programmes. These efforts show that SMU is committed to improving its environmental footprint. Specifically, the AC complimented SMU’s efforts to engage and include staff and students in the design and implementation of its environmental initiatives.

SEC’s AC mentioned in their SEAA 2018 assessment report “SMU is in a strong position to take on a leadership role, to guide other schools through collaborations and develop innovative solutions”.

Moving forward, SMU aims to enhance its environmental performance and impact by enhancing its existing initiatives and programmes to shape and derive meaningful social and environmental outcomes.
