SMU’S ACCOUNTANCY UNDERGRADUATE EUGENE TAN HAS WON AN AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SCORES FOR THE CERTIFIED MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANT EXAMINATIONS

Eugene Tan Jin Han, a fourth year Double Degree Undergraduate from the SMU School of Accountancy has received the Student Certificate of Distinguished Performance for his outstanding score on the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). The award is presented to the top performing students from around the world taking the same CMA exam.

The CMA programme was established in 1972 by the IMA to encourage further development in management accounting and to provide for professional recognition of the management accountant. To date, over 62,700 accountants and finance professionals have earned the Certification.

In his letter addressed to the school on 18 September, Dennis Whitney, Senior Vice President of CMA, wrote, “Passing the exam is a major accomplishment for any individual – winning an award is truly an outstanding achievement and deserves special recognition. In achieve this award, Eugene has demonstrated exceptional proficiency in many facets of accounting and financial management and scored in the top one percent of candidates taking the exams.”

“We are very proud of Eugene, for achieving the top 1% of the CMA exam results globally and as the first student from a Southeast Asian university endorsed under the IMA Higher Education Endorsement Program to clinch this award. This is a strong testament to the academic rigour of our Accountancy programme and we hope that more will follow in his footsteps.” – Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor Cheng Qiang, Dean of School of Accountancy.

Upon passing this CMA exam, Eugene would require just two years of working experience to achieve the CMA professional designation.

Eugene was also the first Singaporean student to be selected for the IMA Student Leadership Experience programme in San Diego in February 2018. You can read more about his experience here.
