Meet Jerrie Liao, SMU Social Sciences undergraduate, diver and a marine conservationist. Jerrie was one of three Singaporeans youths selected to pilot an initiative to clean up Brunei’s Jerudong Beach under the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) 2018, and she isn't stopping there. Jerrie knows that there isn't a silver bullet that can solve all issues once and for all—change requires collective effort and perseverance. In this SMU Changemakers series, she shares with us how and why she began her journey into marine conservation.
Being a changemaker is not for the fainthearted—it takes boldness, resilience, empathy and a huge dose of commitment. In this series we pay homage to individuals at SMU who are dedicated to go beyond simply doing good, to advance the cause they believe in and effect a positive change in our world. From environmental issues, healthcare needs to helping the vulnerable, they are innovative problem-solvers who are determined to help communities overcome social issues and to ensure that no one gets left behind. They are the SMU Changemakers.
